BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Three bridges that were impaired by high rising floodwaters will open in coming weeks in a neighboring county.

N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews are actively working to reopen in three areas of N.C. 211 in Brunswick County:

  • Near St. James over Beaverdam Creek
  • North of Southport over Dutchman Creek
  • Near Southport over Duke Energy Canal

Currently, the N.C. 211 widening project is paused to focus on the bridge repairs.

The Beaverdam Creek bridge will be the first to open by Friday, Sept. 20, late afternoon.

As well, a drainage pipe has to be installed temporarily at Dutchman Creek, which NCDOT crews said would take several weeks before it reopens. A new bridge will also be built within the next year or so.

Over Duke Energy Canal near Southport, the bridge will reopen to traffic in several weeks. Crews are assessing damage and will put together a repair plan.

NCDOT continues to ask for public patience, as more than 130 roadways and bridges were closed earlier in the week due to aftereffects of tropical cyclone eight. Most roads have reopened, though floodwaters still impact some roadways. The NCDOT asks motorists to avoid driving around barricades and plan for delays in the county.
