OAK ISLAND — A Brunswick County beach town has hired its new leader since David Kelly retired from his post as Oak Island town manager earlier this summer.

On Tuesday in a special called closed session, town council decided to move forth in hiring Kathryn Adams. Voted on unanimously in a public forum, Adams will have a three-year contract.
“The breadth and depth of Kathryn’s experience in public administration will prove to be a tremendous asset to the town as we map our path forward with vision and intention in the near term,” Mayor Liz White said in a release.
An Oak Island resident, Adams is familiar with local issues facing the town and government, as she was formerly the assistant town manager and finance director. She has been serving as interim town manager since Kelly stepped down.
According to the mayor, Adams — who has a masters in public administration — has been in public service for more than two decades, serving as secretary of administration under former North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory. Adams received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for her work in that role.
She also has served as town manager and budget director for other municipalities in Florida and North Carolina.
“She has easily earned the respect of not only the Council, but that of her leadership team, the staff, and her colleagues across the County and State,” White said in a release.
Town residents and business owners are welcome to meet Adams ahead of town council’s regular Sept. 10 meeting, to take place at 5 p.m.
