WILMINGTON — A local official was taken into custody on Monday, May 20.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office arrested Kevin Spears, a Wilmington City Council member, who is serving his second term on the board.

Spears has been charged with criminal contempt and held without bond. He was in court for a child custody hearing and found to be disruptive, according to the district attorney’s office.

WECT, a media partner to Port City Daily, first reported the contempt order details, noting when Spears was on the stand he would not respond to questions. The order said it added to delayed proceedings and during testimony Spears engaged in “irrelevant banter,” also disrespectful to the judicial system hearing.

Judge Heath Nance held him in contempt and ordered him to 24 hours in jail.

The DA’s office said as of 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, the order was disposed and Spears is expected to be released.
