The Agenda: In local government this week

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Every Monday Port City Daily will share upcoming government meetings around the tri-county region. If there’s an item of public interest, we’ll include that below the listed meeting, too.

Monday, May 6

Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will meet twice Monday. The 9 a.m. meeting will be a budget workshop meeting. There is not a proposed tax increase nut there will be wastewater and sewer fee changes; see the agenda here. A regular commissioners’ meeting will take place at 3 p.m. The agenda includes a presentation about National Hurricane Preparedness Week and Longrood Road sewer funding offer.   

The Oak Island Town Council will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. The council will hear presentations from the firms proposing to help the town find a new town manager. There will be discussion and consideration on who to select. Livestream the meeting here

The Oak Island Recreation Advisory Board meeting will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Oak Island Community Center, 102 SE 47th Street. An agenda was not posted by press. 

Pender County Board of Commissioners will meet at 4 p.m at Pender County Public Assembly Room 805 S. Walker Street. The agenda includes a presentation on national PFAS drinking water standards and approval of FEMA buyout program policy.

The Wilmington City Council will hold an agenda briefing at 8:30 a.m. in city hall, 102 N. Third St. Meetings are livestreamed here.

The New Hanover County Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 1 p.m. in the Board of Education Center, 1805 S. 13th St., in a closed session to conduct a student appeal hearing.

The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners will meet at 4 p.m. in the NHC Courthouse, 24 N. Third St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda can be viewed here.

The Southport Board of Aldermen will meet at 9 a.m. in the Southport Community Building, 223 E. Bay St. Meetings are live streamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Proposal by Crown Castle
  • Update on Brunswick Partnership for Housing
  • Creek lab results 

Tuesday, May 7 

Surf City Town Council will meet at 4:30 p.m. at Surf City Municipal Complex, 214 W. Florence Way. The agenda includes consideration of approval of the 2024-25 budget ordinance and approval of a coastal forest overlay district ordinance revision. 

The Wilmington City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. in city hall, 102 N. Third St. Meetings are live streamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Public Hearing: Ordinance Amending the Official Zoning Maps of the City of Wilmington to Rezone Property at 203 52nd Street from R-10, Medium-Density Single-Dwelling District to R-5, Medium-Density Mixed Residential District 
  • Resolution Authorizing the City Manager to Enter into an agreement with Terroir Development, LLC, for Gap Financing for affordable workforce housing utilizing $440,000 of HUD HOME Funds 

Brunswick Board of Elections will meet at 5 p.m. at the Commissioners’ Chambers in the David Sandifer Administration Building, 30 Government Center Drive NE. The special meeting will discuss absentee ballots for the secondary primary and other items as needed. It can be livestreamed here.

New Hanover County Board of Elections will meet at 5 p.m. in the Longleaf Room, 1241 A Military Cutoff Road, to review absentee ballot applications and discuss other election-related matters as needed. Those who cannot attend in person can call in telephonically,1-336-218-2051, press 541 796 935 followed by pound. It also can be livestreamed here.

Pender County Board of Elections will meet at 807 S. Walker Street to discuss absentee ballots. It’s open to the public and begins at 6 p.m.

The Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization will have a special meeting at 11 a.m. at Dram Tree Park to tour the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Preservation Project. 

The Brunswick County Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. in the conference room of The Center of Applied Sciences and Technology (COAST), 1109 Old Ocean Highway. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • 2024 NC Teacher Working Conditions Survey Report
  • CCTV contract
  • NC SHAPE Healthful Living Curriculum Adoption for Grades 6-9 

The New Hanover County Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. in the Board of Education Center, 1805 S. 13th St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes: 

  • Decision on the board’s legal services 
  • Task force committee update 

Wednesday, May 8

Topsail Beach Town Council will meet at 6 p.m at town hall, 820 S. Anderson Blvd. The agenda includes consideration of a draft food truck ordinance and hiring a design firm to construct a new public safety/town hall facility.

Southport ABC Board meets at 2 p.m. at the ABC Store, ​​714 N. Howe St. An agenda was not posted by press.

Cape Fear Public Utility Authority Board will meet at 9 a.m. at 230 Government Center Dr. The agenda includes adoption of the 2024-25 budget ordinance and a $40,374 sole source purchase with Swan Analytical USA, Inc. for water quality analyzer panels for the Monterey Heights production wells. 

Thursday, May 9

The Wilmington Historic Preservation Commission will meet at 5:30 p.m. in city hall, 102 N. Third St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes: 

  • 8 Market Street (R04720-011-007-000) MJW – 30 – 2405: Historic District – Overlay Central Business District (CBD-O): After the Fact Storefront Alterations.
  • 111 Ann Street (R05405-017-010-000) MJW – 31 – 2405: Historic District – Residential (HD-R): Exterior Alterations: Rear Porch Enclosure.
  • 323 South 4th Street (R05308-010-005-000) MJW – 29 – 2405: Historic District – Residential (HD-R): Installation of Driveway and Landscaping on a Corner Lot.
