NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A local rally is being held to call for investments in New Hanover County Schools students before the school board’s meeting on Tuesday.
The rally will take place March 12 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Board of Education Center, 1805 S. 13th St. It’s hosted by the New Hanover County Democratic Party, New Hanover County Association of Educators, the New Hanover County American Federation of Teachers and New Hanover County Educational Justice.
Ahead of the rally, New Hanover County Democratic Party Chair Jill Hopman called on Republican leaders to advocate for an infusion of money into NHCS.
“Yes, we all can and should do more, but Republicans are why we are facing a $20M budget shortfall and 279 staff cuts,” Hopman said in a statement. “They are why we wasted exorbitant legal fees on book bans, DEI, and a punitive ethics policy.”
Hopman will speak at the rally, along with Democratic school board candidates Tim Merrick, Judy Justice and Jerry Jones, along with congressional candidates Marlando Pridgen, Jonathan Berger and more than a dozen others.
