WILMINGTON — A 24-year-old woman is in jail after being arrested Wednesday for felony child abuse.
Mackenzie Katlyn Reed of Wilmington faces three charges in total, including involuntary manslaughter and child abuse/neglect serious physical injury.
Investigators with the Wilmington Police Department have been looking into the case, which took place last fall on Oct. 3 shortly after 2:30 a.m. According to a release from WPD, the incident happened in the 800 block of Castle Street, when officers responded to an unconscious infant who was not breathing.
First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the infant passed away. Officers say Reed was sleeping with the infant and sometime in the middle of the night suffocated the baby.
In 2022, detectives found another child of Reed’s had died, with whom she was co-sleeping with as well.
Charges were brought forth due to investigations from the Wilmington Police Department Special Victims Unit, in conjunction with the New Hanover County District Attorney’s Office.
Reed has a $500,000 secured bond.
