NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A newcomer has announced her candidacy for the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners.

Wilmington resident Cassidy Santaguida, former public school teacher, business leader in the tech sector, community advocate and single mother, is running as a Democrat.

So far, she’ll be up against incumbent Jonathan Barfield and current board of education member Stephanie Walker in the March primaries.

“I’m excited to bring a fresh perspective and strong leadership to the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners,” Santaguida said in a press release. “My experiences as a teacher, business leader, advocate, and single mom have shaped my understanding of the diverse needs of our community. I am committed to working collaboratively to address these needs and ensure a prosperous future for New Hanover County.”

Santaguida has lived in Wilmington for seven years and plans to use her experience in education to collaborate with the New Hanover County Board of Education. Throughout her time in New Hanover County, she’s participated in various local initiatives and is dedicated to community advocacy, the release states.

As a single mother, Santaguida said she understands the importance of family values and will prioritize policies that strengthen families and creating a thriving community for everyone.

Her campaign will focus on “transparency, inclusivity and accessibility,” according to her release.
