WPD searching for suspect of stolen vehicle after telephone pole collision

WILMINGTON — Officers responded to a vehicle crash just after 12:30 p.m. Saturday when an individual drove a vehicle into a telephone pole.

The driver fled the scene, in the 1900 block of Dawson Street, on foot prior to Wilmington Police Department officers arriving. The telephone pole broke and was leaning into the street. It led to several traffic signals in the area to lose power; however, WPD deployed four generators to power the signals.

The Dawson Street Extension was shut down for several hours while Duke Energy crews made repairs.

In addition, the vehicle being driven by the suspect, a 2017 Mazda CX-5, was reported stolen Friday.

This is an ongoing investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the WPD at 910-343-3609 or using the anonymous Tip 411 app.
