BRUNSWICK COUNTY — It’s flu season and one county is taking extra steps to make sure vaccines are available.
Brunswick County Health Services is hosting two pop-up clinics for the flu vaccine on from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 3 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church, 1229 Cedar Grove Road in Supply and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 16 at Mulberry Community Center, 149 Mulberry St. in Shallotte.
Appointments are not required and anyone over the age of 6 months is eligible for a shot. Those with mobility issues — or anyone not wanting to enter the clinic — can receive their vaccines from their vehicles.
Annual flu shots are recommended for everyone 6 months and older with children under 5, adults 65 and older, pregnant women and people with underlying medical conditions at increased risk of severe illness or complications from the flu.
Written permission from a parent or legal guardian is required to administer the shot to anyone 17 years old and younger. A consent form can be downloaded here.
Flu viruses typically spread in fall and winter with activity peaking between December and February. The vaccine can lower the chance of getting the flu, reduce severity of the illness and reduce the risk of being hospitalized.
Regular flu vaccines are $47 and senior flu vaccines — recommended for those 65 years old and over — are $95. Health Services accepts cash, checks, Medicaid, Medicare and most major insurance. Bring photo IDs and insurance cards, if available.
Flu vaccines are still available at Brunswick Health Services main clinic in Bolivia, 25 Courthouse Drive, by appointment Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
