Abbey Nature Preserve in Scotts Hill, right over the New Hanover County border, will shut down starting Oct. 16 for the public’s safety as crews begin land development on the adjacent property.

“We are in close communication with the developers of the adjacent property, and Abbey Nature Preserve will be reopened once it is safe to enter,” Pender County Parks and Recreation Director Zach White said in a press release. “The Preserve is a special place in the community, and our goal is to keep people safe.”

Signage will be placed around the entrances to the preserve. A fence was recently installed on the boundary line between Abbey Nature Preserve and Mungo Homes’ pending development land.

The 250-year-old land was owned by the Foy family before being sold to Mungo Homes last year. The company asked Pender County’s parks and recreation department to lease the 62 acres of the preserve, which is held under conservation easements through the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust.

Mungo Homes plans to deed the full 62 acres to the county — which cannot and will not ever be developed — along with an additional 7.5 acres for a future park.
