WILMINGTON — A Wilmington man was arrested Tuesday afternoon for possessing a firearm as a felon and attempting to flee from police.
Right before 3:30 p.m., Wilmington Police Department officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation near 14th and Queen streets. They determined the person involved was Deifalla Malik Johnson and identified the vehicle he drives.
About an hour later, members of the Mobile Field Force — comprising WPD and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office deputies — spotted Johnson driving a dark grey dodge in the 1200 block of Orange St.
Officers attempted a traffic stop, but Johnson fled and wrecked his car into a tree in the 400 block of Ann Street. He then fled on foot and attempted to get rid of his gun.
Johnson, 31, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, felony flee to elude arrest and multiple other traffic violations.
