SUNSET BEACH — A sea turtle rescue over the weekend has prompted the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office to issue a warning to local boaters.

The office noted that injuries to sea life has increased in the area, surpassing previous years.

“If boaters would slow down, injuries to sea life from propeller strikes could be avoided,” a release on BCSO Marine Patrol Unit’s social media states.

Propeller strikes are a leading cause of death to marine life. They often can be misidentified as trash bags or debris in the water.

A civilian contacted the Sunset Beach Turtle Watch on Friday about a turtle that had been hit. The turtle was rescued from the Intracoastal Waterway and, while being transported to the hospital, passed away.

“Sea turtles, along with other creatures, often surface for air and to warm up,” the marine unit noted. “Please be safe out on the waters and look out for the beautiful sea life.”
