
SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — When an independent dark comedy landed in a sleepy coastal town of North Carolina in the spring, Port City Daily was the first to break the news of its star-studded cast and crew — ahead of industry publications like Deadline and Variety.
Listed on film permits as “The Problem With Providence” — which has since been dropped to “Providence” — the crime comedy will star Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“500 Days of Summer”), Lily James (“Pam and Tommy”), Joey Lauren Adams (“Chasing Amy”), stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan, Himesh Patel (“Yesterday”) and Uzo Aduba (“Orange is the New Black”).

According to IMDB, the story follows a small island of town residents that “navigate a sensational murder and the discovery of a million dollars, a series of increasingly bad decisions upend the once peaceful community.”
The film created just over 100 crew jobs and at least 60 extra positions. It set up throughout Southport in May and June of 2022 at various locations, including Southport Ace Hardware, Edgewater 122, Potter’s Seafood, Riverside Motel, Old Smithville Cemetary, and Bald Head Island Ferry.
Directed by Potsy Ponciroli (“Old Henry,” “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot”), “Providence” is written by Michael Vukadinovich and produced by Limelight, Boies Schiller Entertainment and Hideout Pictures. It has a 2023 release, though no date has been confirmed.
