NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Reports of an active shooter have a large law enforcement presence at New Hanover High School, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office responded to a 911 call regarding an active shooter at the high school this morning.

No shots were fired and deputies have not found a gunman, according to NHCSO Lt. Jerry Brewer. New Hanover High School is currently under lockdown as officers are scouting the campus to make sure it’s clear.
Brewer said the office believes the call was a “swatting” attempt, a harassment tactic where someone falsely reports a dangerous situation to send emergency services.
Around 9:30 a.m., high school parents received an emergency text and phone call alerting them of the situation:
“New Hanover High School is on lockdown as Law Enforcement investigates a phoned-in report to an active shooter on campus. There is no confirmation of shots fired at this time. There are no injuries. Williston and Gregory are also on lockdown out of an abundance of caution. Families will be notified when the lockdown is lifted.”
“We will resume the instructional days as normal once the lockdown is lifted,” according to New Hanover County Schools District spokesperson Russel Clark.
The lockdown was lifted as of 10:30 a.m.
