Man arrested for attempted murder at ER

Hospital police make arrest after alleged strangulation, attempted murder of employees

Rothwell Jacob Simmons faces two counts of assault by strangulation and two counts of attempted murder.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Two team members of New Hanover Regional Medical Center were injured inside the emergency room department Tuesday.

Rothwell Jacob Simmons, 24, is in custody with a $7.5-million secured bond and charged with two counts of assault by strangulation and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. He was arrested by NHRMC Company Police at 4:30 p.m.

Simmons appeared before Judge Chad Hogston Wednesday afternoon, and the bond remains in place. He was appointed an attorney from the Public Defender’s Office.

Novant Health is not releasing the names of the victims or detailing the extent of their injuries at this time. A statement from a Novant Health spokesperson also said they “will not discuss any personnel connections to the incident.”

The investigation is ongoing.
