WILMINGTON — Candidate Janice Cavanaugh has ended her campaign to retake a seat on the New Hanover County Board of Education where she served for over two decades.
Cavanaugh said it was a serious decision, but that she wanted to help support her family as they navigate the return to school.
“I have withdrawn from the race. I did not arrive at this decision lightly. But I must do what is necessary to help my 2 grandchildren,” Cavanaugh said.
“Given the continued uncertainty of when our community’s schools will return to normal, I have withdrawn my candidacy so that I may better support my school-aged grandchildren as their parents navigate distance learning while working full time,” she said. “It has been a privilege and an honor to serve the families of New Hanover County. I wish health and success to the educators, administrators, staff, and students as they enter the new school year!”
Cavanaugh lost her re-election bid in 2018 but filed again earlier this year. winning one of three Republican primary spots in March.
According to New Hanover County Board of Elections Director Rae Hunter-Havens, the executive committee of the county’s Republican party is permitted to submit a replacement nominee (who must be a registered member of the Republican party at the time of the nomination).
