ICYMI – Fired WPD cop wants job back, plus Pender schools and more [Free]

One of three Wilmington police officers fired last month is in the process of appealing to get his job back.

The roof of City Hall (a.k.a. Thalian Hall) has needed repairs for years. The work, which finally found funding this summer will take six to eight weeks.

Half of New Hanover County school employees would prefer to work remotely — and dozens felt even more strongly, saying they’d use leave time, or even quit, to avoid going back.

Walter L. Parsley Elementary School shares the name of a member of the Secret Nine who hosted racist co-conspirators in 1898 at his home to plan the only known coup d’état in American history. For that reason, some would like to rename it — but the story of the school’s namesake is complicated.

Pender County Schools did not answer questions regarding the use of an outside law firm to investigate alleged racist comments by Pender High employees, instead of using its contracted firm Schwartz and Shaw, whose attorney was reprimanded in 2006 for detrimental conduct in a school sexual assault investigation in Avery County.
