WILMINGTON — The Wilmington Police Department is searching for the mother of a newborn baby boy found that was “left for dead” in a trash can on Thursday afternoon.

According to police, the baby was discovered alive around 5 p.m. by a resident who was out walking on the 3600 block of Fairview Drive, off Carolina Beach Road. Police say the resident heard the baby’s cries coming from a trashcan in a church parking lot and called 911. The baby was found in a trash bag that had been cinched close.

Police emphasized the baby is still alive, and was transported for care by EMS. Later Thursday evening, WPD tweeted that the baby had been seen by doctors and was ‘doing well.’

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the mother is asked to call 910-343-3609 or use Tip708.com to provide tips anonymously.
