NEW HANOVER COUNTY — An Ashley High School student athlete has tested positive for Covid-19 one week after the school system resumed athletic practices.

Limited and voluntary athletic practices resumed July 6 in New Hanover County Schools. Meanwhile, Brunswick County Schools opted to push back its voluntary summer workout start date to July 20.

The student that has tested positive attended practice on July 6 and has not since attended practices, according to a NHCS press release.

Students attending summer workouts at NHCS are not permitted to enter school buildings (excluding gymnasiums and other athletic facilities), per NCHSAA recommended guidelines. Their temperatures are checked daily. Coaches are required to wear face coverings and students may remove face coverings when not engaged in physical activity.
