Mayor Saffo: Wilmington lifting all local restrictions, under state orders now [Free read]

WILMINGTON — Mayor Bill Saffo announced that the City of Wilmington’s additional restrictions due to Covid-19 will be lifted as of 5 p.m. Friday. Although cases of Covid-19 continue to rise across the state, the City of Wilmington will now be strictly under state guidelines for restrictions.

The state is now into phase two, albeit, a modified phase two compared to what was originally expected and restrictions have been lifted for many businesses. Despite the seemingly positive direction, the state has actually seen some of the largest day-to-day spikes in Covid-19 cases.

According to the State Department of Health and Human Services, on May 29, 1,076 lab-confirmed cases were reported to the state. This is second only to May 23 which saw 1,107 confirmed cases.

It is worth noting that with increased testing we will inevitably see increased positive test results.

At 5 p.m. Friday the additional restrictions, like those on hotels and motels will expire and the city will be following Governor Roy Cooper’s restrictions. Saffo stressed the importance of following these restrictions and wearing a mask as well as social distancing.
