
WILMINGTON — A broad daylight shooting between two cars on Oleander Drive turned into a high-speed crash, leaving one dead on Sunday; three suspects are charged with murder.
According to the Wilmington Police Department (WPD), the shooting started on Eastwood Road between two vehicles sometime around 1 p.m. One of the vehicles then traveled onto Oleander Drive in the direction of College Road.
This vehicle, apparently fleeing the shooters, crashed at an estimated 100 mph into an Oak tree at 5733 Oleander Drive. According to WPD, the driver — 23-year-old Daiquan Evander Jacobs — sustained a gunshot wound and is believed to have passed out behind the wheel. Jacobs’ vehicle accelerated down Oleander, striking a retaining wall, a fence, and then the tree, according to WPD. Jacobs was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center but died shortly afterward.
The second vehicle was located by officers with three suspects inside, all three were charged:
- Montaisha Love Sutton, 18: 1st Degree Murder, Possession of Stolen Firearm, shooting into an occupied vehicle, Discharge a firearm in City Limits.
- Dequan Mullins, 18: 1st Degree Murder, Possession of Stolen Firearm, shooting into an occupied vehicle, Discharge a firearm in City Limits
- Tyquan Jireese Mallette, 19: 1st Degree Murder, Possession Firearm by Felon, Possession Stolen Firearm, Shooting in occupied vehicle, discharge of a firearm in city limits. (Prior felony convictions for possession and receiving a firearm).
The shooting and crash are still under investigation and WPD has not released any additional information.
