BRUNSWICK COUNTY — If someone purporting to be a Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputy — or any law enforcement officer — asks you for money, beware. There’s a new scam spreading statewide in which callers mimic local phone numbers impersonating law enforcement officers.
According to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, a caller is using real names of deputies in the department. Using a “spoofed” phone number that appears as a Sheriff’s Office line, the caller tells the victim they failed to respond to a jury summons and owes a fee.
“The Sheriff’s Office will never call demanding money or threaten arrest,” the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a social media post.
In general, people should be wary and suspicious of any callers who demand money or personal information. The Brunswick County Sherrif’s Office suggests individuals who receive calls like this to contact law enforcement.
