WILMINGTON — New Hanover High School’s head baseball coach will have a court date next month, facing misdemeanor assault charges after he allegedly put his hands around the neck of a female student in the gymnasium.
As first reported by WECT on Friday evening, the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Richard Foy was served with a criminal summons — not arrested — after being charged with misdemeanor assault.
According to court records, Foy is charged with a class A1 misdemeanor, the most serious non-felony class of offense, under state statute 14-33(C)(2), which includes assault on a female by a male over the age of 18.
Foy, who is a physical education and health teacher at New Hanover, has been suspended with pay pending an investigation. According to the New Hanover County Schools district, that suspension began on Thursday.
Foy is due in New Hanover County District Court on Thursday morning, January 16, 2020.
