WILMINGTON — The Wilmington Police Department is conducting its own investigation into the shooting incident involving a New Hanover County Sheriff’s Deputy on Thursday.

The incident involved a New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office vice and narcotics detective and a suspect, 22-year-old Rodney Donnell Hansley, Jr.

“The shooting happened when the detective was trying to detain Hansley during a drug investigation around 1:30 pm in the Burger King parking lot off S. 3rd Street. Hansley was also wanted for felony interfering with an electronic device [tampering with a monitoring device],” according to the Wilmington Police Department.

The request for a WPD investigation apparently came from Sheriff Ed McMahon.

“McMahon says he believes using an outside agency to conduct the criminal investigation will help to maintain the case’s integrity and provide transparency to the community. Hansley remains in stable condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. No one else was injured during the shooting. No charges have been filed against Hansley at this time,” according to WPD.
