WILMINGTON — The Wilmington Police Department celebrated its four-legged animal cops on Friday with a true dog and pony show (in a good way). The event honored both the department’s K9 and mounted patrol units.
“The Mounted Patrol began operations in December 1988. The K9 unit got its start a few years before in early 1982. For more than three decades, these units have served the City of Wilmington, its resident, and its visitors tirelessly,” WPD spokeswoman Jennifer Dandron said.
Founding members of both units were in attendance Friday and reflected on their experiences with the department. After honoring the animals as well as their human counterparts, both divisions offered a demonstration to show just what they have to offer.
