Wilmington Police Department asks for help finding hit-and-run suspect

The suspect, Gertha Johnson Harlee of Leland, allegedly fled the scene despite being flagged down by witnesses.

WILMINGTON — Police are asking for the public’s help to help track down a hit-and-run suspect they have been seeking for several weeks.

According to the Wilmington Police Department (WPD), Gertha Johnson Harlee, 58, of Leland, is wanted for a hit an run on Oleander Drive that took place on August 8. Harlee allegedly backed into a victim’s vehicle in the Hanover Center parking lot around 3:15 p.m., causing approximately $1,750 in damage.

WPD stated several witnesses saw “Harlee, who had children in her car, fled the scene without stopping or attempting to find the victim, despite being flagged down. When the victim exited the business, witnesses alerted her to the crash.”

WPD is charging Harlee with hit and run leaving the scene with property damage, no liability insurance, and “failure to see before backing.”

Harlee has prior misdemeanor convictions for writing worthless checks and a DWI, according to North Carolina Department of Public Safety recrods.
