WILMINGTON — The Masonboro Loop Road Multi-Use Path has been in the works since it was first approved as part of the 2014 Transportation Bond, but the City of Wilmington is now requesting an extension that will see the completion of the path by November 2019.
City Council will vote on Tuesday night to approve a resolution and agreement with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to extend the project completion date for the 2,200-linear-foot path. The path will run from Andrews Reach Loop Road to the entrance of Parsley Elementary School and is part of the 1.4-mile trail from Pine Grover Drive to Navajo Trail.
The 2014 Transportation Bond is a $55 million bond project with 38 different projects throughout the City of Wilmington.
“Construction of the trail will occur in two phases. Phase 1 will build the trail from Navaho Trail to Parsley Elementary School and is expected to take about eight months to complete. Phase 2 will build the trail from the school to Pine Grove Drive and take about four months to complete,” according to city documents.
The 2014 bond set construction dates for the different projects from 2015-2020 and had the goal of completion of all of the projects within five to seven years.
The bond project has already seen several completed projects including the Love Grove Memorial Bridge which was opened in April of this year. Sidewalks along Dawson Street between Wrightsville Avenue and Oleander Drive have also been completed along with an approximately 1-mile stretch of sidewalks in the Fairlawn neighborhood.
Of the 37 projects, 14 are currently in different stages of development, according to the City of Wilmington.
