BURGAW — Nearly 20 trees surrounding the Pender County Historic Courthouse will be removed due to safety concerns.

Several of the Laurel Oaks on the property have begun to rot from the inside out which poses a threat to people, cars and property. The tree-removal process will take place over a three-year period, and new trees will be planted to replace the rotting trees. The first batch of trees removals will take place this June, after the Blueberry Festival. Then, in the fall, new trees will be planted to replace them.
