‘Beats and a beer’ – A deeper look at this week’s stories

Every week, Port City Daily Assistant Editor Ben Schachtman joins 98.3 The Penguin’s Beau Gunn to take a look at the top stories of the week. The half-hour “Beats and a Beer” segment airs Fridays at 4 p.m.

This week, we took a closer look at how China’s “National Sword” policies have caused a back-log of cardboard in the United States, in particular at New Hanover County’s recycling facility. We also checked in with the rapid developments happening at Freeman Park, including resurgent rumors of a possible beach resort.

Other stories this week included the “deaths of desperation” affecting middle-age white men in New Hanover County – a topic that alarmed both Gunn and Schachtman, as they are both approaching that demographic. We also touched on the increased cost of parking at Wrightsville Beach.
