WILMINGTON — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has seized a large quantity of the drug known as fentanyl for the second time in a week. More than 3 pounds of the deadly drug was seized on Wednesday.

The NHCSO Gang Task Force, along with the FBI Street Safe Task Force, conducted a follow-up investigation after seizing more than enough fentanyl to kill everyone in New Hanover County on Monday.

“Detectives believed other people were involved in that narcotics operation and have been actively pursuing leads. Detectives conducted surveillance on Jonathan O’Brian Sweet in the area of Flint Drive after identifying that he was staying at an apartment in the area. Detectives observed Jonathan Sweet and Randall Joye leaving an apartment, walk to the area of Flint Drive and Harbour Drive where Sweet was observed conducting a hand to hand drug transaction,” according to NHCSO Spokesperson Jerry Brewer.

Detectives arrested Sweet and searched the property at 2527 Flint Drive in Wilmington. “Detectives found a handgun and 1498 grams (3.3 pounds) of fentanyl. Sweet was searched and detectives found 5.79 grams of crack cocaine and 90 bags of heroin packaged for sale inside his pants,” according to a press release.

Sweet was charged with several drug-related charges and is being held without bond.

“Randall Joye was charged with Conspire to Sell/Deliver Heroin. He received a $20,000 secured bond.

“Detectives were familiar with Jonathan Sweet as he was out on bond for Heroin trafficking and possession with intent to sell/deliver heroin charges stemming from an investigation and arrest in March 2017. Vice & Narcotics Detectives executed a search warrant on March 20, 2017 at 702 Nut Bush Court. Detectives found 4.26 grams of raw heroin and 302 bags of heroin packaged for sale in that residence during that search,” according to the release.

District Attorney Ben David said the bond for Sweet has been set at $20 million.
