BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Counterfeit $100 bills were used in several incidents over the last week, according to reports filed to the Sheriff’s Office.

In at least two incidents, and possibly more, fake $100 bills were used to purchase goods and apparently in exchange for change in legal tender.

On Friday, Jan. 5, a man in Longwood reported having sold an Apple Macbook for $700, receiving payment in the form of seven counterfeit $100 bills. The following day, a man in the town of Ash reported receiving a single fake $100 bill. Both incident reports list a black male, between 5 feet 5 inches and 5 feet 9 inches, as a suspect.

A third incident may also involve fake $100 bills. A man reported an incident of counterfeiting in Ocean Isle Beach; according to Sheriff’s Office records, it appears two Sony cameras worth about $185 were purchase. The report is classified as “Counterfeiting – buying and selling,” but unlike the other reports the $100 bills weren’t specifically mentioned; the report lists a black male, about 6 feet 5 inches, as a suspect.

It is uncertain if these incidents or suspects are related in any way. According to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Emily Flax, the incidents are still under investigation.
