NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Residents in New Hanover County should be wary of black ice after temperatures drop to the low 20s overnight.

The National Weather Service has released a special message warning residents of New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender and surrounding counties to look out of black ice. The service asks that motorists keep their speed down during their morning commute.

“Black ice may develop late tonight and Thursday morning,” the report states. “What may appear to be just wet, may actually be a patch of black ice.”

After southeastern North Carolina experienced rain Wednesday, the National Weather Service predicts that any wet areas remaining will freeze overnight in temperatures that may reach the low 20s.

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service warned residents of the area to be careful when traveling bridges and overpasses. That warning has extended to Wednesday evening through Thursday morning.
