Expect delays, work set for Cape Fear Memorial Bridge starting Monday

WILMINGTON — Motorists traveling over the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge should expect delays next week as the North Carolina Department of Transportation will be doing routine inspections.

According to an NCDOT press release, the Federal Highway Administration requires all bridges to be inspected once every two years.

“Regular inspections help the department identify whether a bridge needs maintenance and repair,” the release states.

Intermittent lane closures begin Monday, Oct. 30 and are expected to end Thursday, Nov. 2. Closures will be between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day. One lane will remain open at all times.

This is subject to change if problems requiring repairs are found during inspections.

“If inspectors find a safety concern, the bridge will be repaired or closed immediately until the repairs can be made,” the release states. “If necessary, weight restrictions will be placed on a bridge. The department will not keep a bridge open if it is determined to be unsafe.”

Although there will be no detours, NCDOT is urging drivers to seek alternate routes. Motorists are also asked to use caution when traveling through the work zone.
