CAROLINA BEACH — Town Council in April approved updated plans for a Harris Teeter to be constructed along North Lake Park Boulevard. But, five months later, fate of the store remains unknown.

The store was initially approved in 2015. Its plans call for nearly 60,000 square feet and it will house a coffee shop as well as a fuel station. After the North Carolina Department of Transportation required the developer to obtain an additional right-of-way to install a turn lane, plans were delayed

When asked for a comment on the status of the construction process, Harris Teeter Communication Manager Danna Robinson said, “We only provide comment to locations where we have executed a lease for a future site or where we are currently operating a store.”

While the company is not talking, the town’s staff is hopeful that the construction will happen. Assistant Town Manager Ed Parvin said the developer has not yet pulled permits for construction, but there have been no indications the company does not plan to build the store.

Parvin also said that the last he has heard was that several Harris Teeter’s that were under construction when the company was bought by Kroger in 2014 were continuing with construction. Stores that were originally planned but had not broken ground were still expected to be constructed, just with a delay, he said.
