WILMINGTON — A sinkhole that opened up on Sanders Road is still on schedule to be repaired before school starts, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Work began last month and although the contractor has faced a few setbacks, Brian Rick of the NCDOT said the project is on schedule.
“The contractor has had a few equipment issues and weather days; however, the project is proceeding as expected and on schedule,” he said.
While the construction is still on schedule, it is not yet known if the efforts to fill the hole are working.
“The grouting is not complete. It is too early to determine whether or not the compaction grout has been successful. Grouting is being performed per plan, and all grout tested thus far has met DOT specifications and requirements,” Rick said.
The sinkhole is located near Bellamy Elementary school, which will see students come back for the new school year at the end of August. Rick said the plan was to have the construction complete by the middle of the month.
