WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH — The Town of Wrightsville Beach voted Monday to allow the sale of alcohol starting at 10 a.m. on Sundays. The change allows restaurants and retailers to sell beer, wine, and mixed drinks two hours earlier than previously permitted.
The vote follows Governor Roy Cooper’s decision to approve the so-called ‘Brunch Bill’ at the end of June.
Wrightsville Beach is now the second municipality in the area to allow the early morning sales after Surf City approved the change July 5. While Wrightsville Beach and Surf City are among the first to approve the measure, other municipalities in the region have added the possibility of Sunday morning alcohol sales to upcoming agendas.
The City of Wilmington will hold a public hearing on July 18 to discuss the possibility of approving the ordinance. The changes would be effective immediately following the approval of City Council, but that decision could be pushed to a later date if the council decides.
For Carolina Beach, Sunday alcohol sales are scheduled to be discussed during a July 25 Town Council workshop, it is not clear when the council would vote on the issue.
The passing of the law allows municipalities and counties to control Sunday alcohol sales, approving the ordinances as local leaders see fit. New Hanover County has not announced if and when the County Commissioners will discuss the topic.
