WILMINGTON — State and local officials gathered along with hundreds of veterans on the deck of the U.S.S. North Carolina to commemorate Memorial Day.
Governor Roy Cooper, who presented the memorial address to the crowd, said he was honored to be at the battleship.
“It’s a symbol of our men and women in the armed forces and it’s a symbol of our great state,” Cooper said. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
Cooper spoke on the importance of honoring military sacrifice. He was joined by newly-appointed Secretary of Natural and Cultural Resources and former state Rep. Susi Hamilton, as well as New Hanover County Commissioner Woody White, Brunswick County Commissioner Frank Williams and Rep. Theodore Davis. Marines from Camp Lejeune performed color guard duties and fired a 21-gun salute.
