WILMINGTON – A section of roadway collapsed in the downtown area today, blocking traffic on N. 2nd Street between Market and Princess streets.

The hole opened on N. 2nd Street by the intersection with Market Street by Slice of Life Pizzeria. Approximately three feet across, the hole formed near a city storm drain. Wilmington Police Department and a repair crew from the City’s Stormwater Maintenance Office were on the scene quickly.

Repairs crews on the scene lowered a camera into the hole to investigate the possible cause of the collapse. However, officials declined to comment on what caused the incident or how long repairs or road closures would continue.
