WILMINGTON — Lower Cape Fear Hospice will honor National Health Care Decisions Week by offering all the opportunity to Begin the Conversation about advance care planning (ACP).
National Health Care Decisions Week is April 16-22.
End-of-life and healthcare planning helps to ensure your wishes are honored when you are unable to communicate for yourself. The workshop will be Friday, April 21, from 10-11:30 a.m. at Phillips LifeCare & Counseling Center, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington.
National Health Care Decisions Day (NHDD), which this year is a week-long event, exists to encourage patients to express their wishes regarding healthcare decision-making.
Organizations in all 50 states will be conducting events to bring attention to the importance of advance care planning.
“Beginning the conversation about advance care planning allows you to decide how you want the last part of your life to play out; where you want to be, who you want to be with and what types of medical interventions you want or don’t want,” said Gwen Whitley, LCFH President and CEO. “It gives you the power to be the author of your own life right up to the very end.”
More than 70 percent of all people state that they want to die at home but very few do because they have not had the conversation with loved ones and put documents into place to ensure their healthcare wishes are known.
At the workshop, the “Begin the Conversation” 7-Step Workbook for Advance Care Planning will be available at no cost. It is filled with valuable information and includes tips on having the discussion about advance directives with physicians and loved ones to ensure your healthcare wishes are honored.
The Begin the Conversation program encourages people to begin the conversation about end-of-life care wishes before a crisis occurs. We want everyone to talk about end of life and understand that advance care planning is process to identify your healthcare choices and communicate them to family and healthcare providers.
