WILMINGTON — There are many reasons to check out the Azalea Festival this weekend, but one of the best is the street food.
The street fair will feature 21 food vendors this year, including some several regional and local favorites. Among the local vendors will be Wilmington’s Poor Piggy’s BBQ, the area’s first food truck for barbecue, including eastern North Carolina style pulled pork and barbecued brisket. Also local is Kona Ice, serving frozen desserts, from Hampstead.

Regionally, several North Carolina vendors will be participating. For snacks, there are cracklins from Yadkin River Pork Skins, or roasted sweet potato from Charlotte-based Jus’ Roastin.
For something more coastal, there’s Flounders Seafood, which closed as a restaurant after being a New Bern staple for a decade. Flounders carried on as a catering company and will be serving fresh seafood.
The Greensboro food truck Hot Diggity Dog will be serving Nathan’s hot dogs (about a dozen different ways). From Matthews, N.C., the Steak Boys will bring 30 years of gyro – and other classic sandwich – expertise.
For those looking for vegetarian options, Raleigh-based food truckers Party in a Pita serve classic Mediterranean street food, including tabouli, falafel and hummus. And, to wash it all down, there’s frozen drinks from the distinctively-named Moose Joose Slush, out of Mooresville.

There will also be vendors serving everything from cinnamon rolls to jerked chicken.
