WILMINGTON — Jason Isbell returns to Wilmington after playing a sold-out show at the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater last year.
Isbell, who is known both for his solo work and his six years fronting Drive-By Truckers, of Athens, Ga., is touring off his 2015 “Something More Than Free,” which won a Grammy Award for Best Americana Album. Isbell has an eclectic range of influences, from Bob Dylan to soul and rock of Muscle Shoals’s FAME studios, where Isbell worked as a young man.
He has garnered an equally eclectic range of admirers, from guitar-rock fans of Isbell’s time in Drive-By Truckers to those who enjoy his quieter, almost literary solo work.
As Walter Kirn, novelist and essayist, says of Isbell’s latest album, “[it is] an album of aching elegance, marked by the sort of lyrical precision that brought to mind certain literary masters of the melancholy American scene, from Flannery O’Connor to Raymond Carver. By avoiding the hairy-chested bombast of arena country music while crafting music with solid melodic contours Isbell created an album, and a sound, of memorably infectious empathy.”
Isbell will be joined by Hiss Golden Messenger, the folk-rock collective from Durham, lead by M.C. Taylor. They will perform at the Wilson Center (703 N. 3rd St., in downtown Wilmington). The show will be Thursday, March 30, produced by The Penguin 98.3 and Huka Entertainment.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the show starting at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices range from $39.50 to $79.50, and will be available starting at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, at Port City Daily’s concert page.
Isbell joins a number of other higher-profile acts coming to Wilmington. Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats and Dawes are both set to perform at Greenfield Lake, on April 22 and May 2, respectively. Tickets for both shows are also available through Port City Daily’s concert page.
