WILMINGTON —What if the Nutcracker did battle with the Mouse King using a light saber? See for yourself when  the 2016 “Great Wilmington Nutcracker” is coming to Cape Fear Community College’s Wilson Center.

The yearly regional production will take place at the Wilson Center’s main stage, located at 703 N. Third St., on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 6 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 18, at 3 p.m., according to The Wilmington Ballet Company & Dance Theater, who is sponsoring the event.

Wilmington Ballet Company boasts the largest show locally produced in the region, and a great achievement of the arts community in Southeastern North Carolina.

The Wilmington Ballet Company is a non-profit ballet organization with a mission to build all of the arts in the Wilmington area with ballet as a central vehicle. Eight local dance studios and two non-profit dance programs are bringing the best of the region’s dancers to the stage.

The production is a mix of both classical dance and other genres. All of the classical parts are danced by The Wilmington School of Ballet, resident professionals of the Wilmington Ballet Company and guests of the Washington Ballet and Columbia Classical Ballet.

The combat scene of the play mixes contemporary dance adults and students with combat “Star Wars” sabers and laser light effects. The two-story mother Ginger is brought on with high-flying tumbling and acrobatics. The angel scene is put on by an international Ariel silk artist. Classical Ballroom dancing takes place during the famous party scene.

Two school choirs and a Gospel choir will serenade the audience as the wait for the show to start and during intermission. On Sunday, a martial arts demonstration will take place at intermission.

The play will also bring opportunities to under-served youth by bringing together students from the “DREAMS of Wilmington” program. Other dance performers will come from Tabor City and Shallotte.

There will be over 400 costume-made costumes on set and “over a tractor trailer” of craftsman-created sets, event organizers said.

Guests will want to arrive early to take advantage of all the fun and pre-show surprises. There are a number of surprises for guests including holiday characters and photo ops. Students from Cape Fear Community College’s  Art Club will also be painting live in the lobby.

Participants include the Wilmington School of Ballet, Techniques in Motion, Port City Gymnastics, Brunswick School of Dance, Southside Dance Center, Evoltion Dance, Studio 1, DREAMS of Wilmington, The Dance Cooperative, Tiger Tae Kwon Doe, the Cape Fear Community College’s Arts Club, and Gore Dolls.
