Heating assistance available for qualified New Hanover County residents

NEW HANOVER COUNTY – The New Hanover County Department of Social Services are preparing to take applications for energy assistance.

Qualified households can apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) on Dec. 1, according to a notice from the county. The program provides a one-time, annual payment to help eligible families pay their heating expenses.

“Last year, we helped 2,829 New Hanover County households through LIEAP and they each received much-needed assistance with their heating bill,” Social Services Director Michelle Winstead said. “We are ready to help even more people stay safe and warm in their homes this winter.”

In order to qualify, households must be responsible for their heating expenses and meet income and other eligibility criteria. If eligible, energy payments are made directly to the heating provider.

From Dec. 1 – 31, applications will only be taken for households with an elderly person (ages 60 and above) or households with a disabled person receiving SSI, SSA, or VA benefits who also receives services through the Division of Aging and Adult Services.

Applications will be taken for any eligible household, as long as funds are available from Jan. 2 through March 31. The household heating bill and verification of all household income must be provided at the time of application.

Applications must be submitted in person at the Department of Social Services, 1650 Greenfield St. For more information, contact the New Hanover County Department of Social Services at 910-798-3400.
