Wilmington Christian alum leads UNC-Wilmington Club Golf Team to third-place at national tournament

ORLANDO, Florida — As the fall sports season continues to wind down, eight hopeful UNC-Wilmington Club Golf Team members packed in two cars and drove south to compete on two former PGA Tour course in the 2016 National Collegiate Club Golf Association (NCCGA) Championship.

The two-day event, held Nov. 19-20, was held at the Walt Disney World Golf Courses in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The Seahawks successfully competed against thirty collegiate teams, including 250 golfers to claim the third place at the national event.

Former Wilmington Christian Academy standout Joey Funderburg shined during the tournament.

The UNCW freshman led the Seahawks with a pair of two-over-par,  74’s, to finish fourth overall as an individual. He was five strokes back from the individual leader to conclude the UNCW Club Golf Teams first ever national tournament appearance.

The achievement was outstanding for these college students, who did not have time for complete practice rounds leading up to the event. Like many of the club sports on campus, UNCW Club Golf is largely funded by its participants.

UNC-Wilmington was listed at No. 32 in the nation in the fall rankings. The Seahawks compete in the North Carolina region alongside 10 other schools, including Wake Forest, UNC-Chapel Hill, N.C. State, Elon, Guilford College, Duke, High Point, Campbell, Davidson and East Carolina.

UNC-Wilmington qualified for nationals as the region leader after winning one of two matches held during the fall. The Seahawks claimed top spot at Tot Hill Farm Golf Club on September 24-25, and took runner-up at the regional tournament held at Carolina Naitonal Golf Club, Oct.15-16.

Funderburg was a multiple time state champion during his playing days at Wilmington Christian Academy. He’s also active on the Carolinas Golf Association summer circuit, with a win at the Coastal Plains Junior Amateur Championship held in July. He also placed third this past Memorial Day weekend at the 4td Creed Boys and Girls Invitational held in Camden, South Carolina.
