Happy Halloween! Coming on a weekday, a Monday no less, we know this year’s is sure to be a busy Halloween. But, when the candy is gone and the porch light is out, we hope you have time to draw the shades and take a little time to reflect on All Hallows Eve before the arrival of November. So, we present to you this classic horror story.
Port City Daily asked Wilmington actor Eric Johann to do a dramatic reading of a horror story for Halloween. He chose two, a monologue from “Frankenstein; of, The Modern Prometheus,” and this, Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat.”
Published in the 1840s, “The Black Cat” is a story that begins with foreshadowing and ends, not unlike “The Telltale Heart,” with … well, you’ll have to listen to find out. (Interludes have been added and are signaled by spooky music.)
About the actor: Eric Johann is a local actor, Bellamy Mansion employee, and aspiring screenwriter. He has worked as a stand-in for locally-shot films for the last three years, including “Under the Dome” (Seasons 1-3), “Sleepy Hollow,” “Good Behavior” and most recently, “Six.”
This year he has starred in several plays including “1776,” “City of Angels,” and “It’s Only A Play.” In the past, he’s performed in “Hello, Dolly,” “Kiss me, Kate” and “The Pajama Game.” He graduated from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington with a communications degree in 2008 and is self-taught in Wilmington’s Civil War history.
