“An Evening Ride on the Carousel” benefit to support Wilmington’s Carousel Center

save-the-date-781x1024WILMINGTON — It will be a good time for a good cause when the Port City Design Group hosts a catered evening of entertainment.

The Nov. 18 event will support the Carousel Center, a Wilmington group dedicated to supporting abused and neglected children. The non-profit children’s advocacy group opened downtown in 2000 and is accredited by the National Children’s Alliance.

Serving Pender, New Hanover, and Brunswick counties, the Carousel Center provides medical screening, forensic interview, and post-traumatic therapy to underage victims of sexual abuse and domestic neglect. The center also arranges for other services and referrals, as well as offering the onsite services of Rudy, a registered therapy dog.

While the “An Evening Ride on the Carousel” won’t feature a literal carousel, it will have a catered dinner, cash-bar, and a variety of children’s performances. Three Wilmington groups will donate their time and talent to the event. The Williston Elementary choir will sing, Techniques in Motion Dance School children’s group will perform three dances, and Williston Middle School orchestra will play a musical piece arranged for strings.

A more serious part of the evening will feature the abuse-survivor testimony of Crystal Sutherland. The Carousel Center will also have staff in attendance to explain more about the center’s services.

Tickets for the event are $100, with a small portion going to cover the costs of the event and all remaining proceeds going to the Carousel Center. The center gets about 25% of its annual $800,000 budget from private donations and fundraising events.

“An Evening Ride on the Carousel” will be held on Friday, Nov. 18, from 6:30-9pm at the Brooklyn Arts Center. Tickets are available from Port City Design Group by phone (910-508-2175) or email ( More information about the Carousel Center is available from their website ( and in this video outlining their mission.
