WILMINGTON — Local authorities are investigating a possible murder-suicide, after a man committed suicide at a local gun range Monday afternoon and left a note that led police to his dead girlfriend at a Wilmington apartment.
New Hanover County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Shooter’s Choice, a local gun range at 6789 Gordon Road at about 2:30 p.m. for a report of a man who had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head, according to sheriff’s office spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer.
Deputies located 26-year-old Justin Hakeem Walker at the scene and transported him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives say Walker entered the business, rented three guns and then shot himself in the head inside the gun range. A note was also located by detectives that said there was another person involved in the incident and directed authorities to an address off Dapple Court.
The sheriff’s office contacted the Wilmington Police Department to do a welfare check for a possible murder-suicide. Police found a deceased woman inside at an apartment off Dapple Court at the Hawthorne at New Centre Apartment complex at about 3 p.m. Monday. Brewer said police had found Walker’s deceased girlfriend.
That woman, identified by police Tuesday as 23-year-old Rebecca Ann Jones, is the subject of a homicide investigation, police spokeswoman Linda Rawley said. The final cause of her death has not been determined. Investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy.
