NEW HANOVER COUNTY — The county will begin its free yard debris pick up from unincorporated areas beginning Monday, Oct. 17, and knowing when it will reach your neighborhood is a click away. The county on Tuesday announced an interactive map is available for residents to track the pickup.
Residents in the unincorporated areas of New Hanover County are asked to take the week to get all vegetative debris cleaned up from their properties and place them near the curbside by Monday.
A debris pick-up schedule map has been created for residents to view the progress of pick-ups; starting Wednesday, residents can see their home’s scheduled pick-up date on the map.
Once the work has started, the map will also be a resource to show what areas are in progress and what has been completed. The map provides a searchable feature for a home’s address, and clearly outlines what areas are unincorporated.
Residents in unincorporated areas of the county will be served and homeowners do not need to schedule pickups. Those in gated communities must have a Home Owners Association official schedule a pickup with the New Hanover Count Environment Management by calling 910-798-4400.
Residents should place yard debris neatly within 5 feet of the curb and away from drainage ditches or storm drains. Debris should be three feet away from your water meter box, fire hydrants, street signs, mailboxes and parked cars. Yard debris should not be bagged, and larger branches should be cut into 12-foot lengths or less.
The use of paper lawn and leaf bags is permitted, but debris in plastic bags will not be picked up for free by the county during the schedule.
A county burn ban is still in effect throughout the county until further notice. Storm debris should not be burned during the ban, due to the increased risk for personal injury and property damage. For more information about the ban contact New Hanover County Fire Rescue at 910-798-7420.
Only vegetative debris, such as branches and vines, from the storm will be picked up. All other waste, including construction debris, can be brought by homeowners to the New Hanover County Landfill at 5210 U.S. Highway 421 North during business hours; Monday through Friday between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., and Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to noon.
Residents can dispose of vegetative debris at the New Hanover County Landfill, at no cost, now through Saturday, Oct. 15. However, staring Monday, the cost will be $1.10 per 200 pounds of vegetative debris.
