WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH — The Town of Wrightsville Beach is under a voluntary evacuation due to the expected impact of Hurricane Matthew.
The storm is expected to bring about 15 inches of rain to the Wilmington area, so there are concerns of flooding in low-lying areas, according to the town’s public information officer Katie Ryan.
However, the three bridges in town – the drawbridge from the mainland to Harbor Island and the two bridges connecting Harbor Island to Shell Island – are not expected to be affected.
“We have no plans to raise the bridge in high hurricane winds,” Ryan said. “We will only close the bridges if there is a mandatory evacuation, and right now we don’t anticipate that.”
Commercial trash pickup scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8 has been canceled.
