Holiday Inn Express evacuated due to damaged sprinkler

WILMINGTON – A damaged sprinkler at the Holiday Inn forced an evacuation of the building Monday morning.

Crews with the Wilmington Fire Department responded to a sprinkler system activation at the Holiday Inn Express at 160 VanCampen Blvd. at 9:38 a.m., according to Battalion Chief David Hines. The hotel was evacuated and power was removed from the building.

An investigation found the sprinkler head on the fourth floor of the hotel had been damaged by a room occupant, Hines said. Firefighters used a sprinkler head stop to try to minimize the flow of water coming out of the sprinkler until they were able to turn off the water supply to the system.

The fire alarm system was turned off and the sprinklers have been shut down. All four floors of the building were damaged by water. Hines said he did not know when the hotel will return to normal operations, but the hotel is handling the relocation evacuees. Firefighters cleared the scene at about noon.
